(EN) Database City is the title of the workshop held in Madrid last month. It was the second edition of a bigger project called Visualizar an open and participartory research project around theory, tools and strategies of information visualization:
“VISUALIZAR 2008 is focused on the city context. Urban environments, which are becoming increasingly dense, complex and diverse, are one of contemporary society’s largest “databases”, daily generating volumes of information that require new methods of analysis and understanding”
Inside the workshop, seven proposal have been developed. My favourites are these two:
- In the air is about making visible the invisible, visualizing gases, particles, pollen, diseases, and other different agents of Madrid’s polluted air. The result is a ghost city surrounded by a multicolored fog changing its shape and hue according to the information feed. Unfortunately the visualization is not online but on display at Medialab-Prado in Madrid through January 11th.
- City Murmur is about visualizing the urban space through the eyes of media. Build online your map fed by a stream of more than 600 RSS feeds from major media outlets and the blogosphere and visualize in real time the changing perception of the city areas.

(IT) Database City è il titolo di un workshop che si è tenuto a Madrid il mese scorso. Si tratta della seconda edizione all’interno di un progetto più ampio chiamato Visualizar, ricerca partecipativa e aperta intorno agli strumenti, strategia e teorie della visualizzazione dell’informazione:
“VISUALIZAR 2008 mette il focus sul contesto cittadino. Gli ambienti urbani stanno diventando sempre più densi, complessi e diversificati, e sono uno dei database più vasti della società contemporanea, generando ogni giorni volumi di informazioni che richiedono nuovi metodi di analisi e comprensione”
Nel workshop si sono affrontate 7 proposte e ora ve ne racconto sinteticamente due:
- In the air rende visibile l’invisibile, permettendo la visualizzazione di gas, particolato, pollini, e altri agenti che inquinano l’aria di Madrid. Il risultato è una sorta di città fantasma circondata da una nebbia multicolore che varia di forma e tonalità a seconda dei feed informativi che riceve. Sfortunatamente non è online ma solo al Medialab-Prado di Madrid fino all’11 di gennaio.
- City Murmur tratta invece dello spazio urbano visto attraverso l’occhio dei media. Puoi costruire la tua mappa scegliendo il tema che ti interessa e aggregando i feed da più di 600 fonti informative mainstream e della blogosfera, visualizzando così la percezione delle aree urbane nei media in tempo reale.
