(EN) What happens when a thematic mapping variable is substituted for land area? You have the great collaborative work of the people behind Worldmapper: they developed an algorithm that allows you to see the world and the various sizes of the country therein, through various statistics. The results are comparable maps (cartograms)  whose geometry or space is distorted in order to convey the information of a chosen variable. Tactical Technology Collective has recently published a booklet about Geographical Mapping Techniques, a useful introduction guide on how to use maps and understand their potential to spread your message. ————— (IT) In un mondo saturo di news e pubblicità, il design dell’informazione è diventata una risorsa preziosa per le organizzazioni per diffondere dati e informazioni che supportano cause sociali. Mapping cities with Onion Maps/ Mappando le città con Onion Maps

(EN) More than 30 maps of cities around the world, from Amsterdam to Washington are now available in a new perspective on Onion Maps. It’s an interactive 3d with the main monuments and skyscrapers outlined in a clear cartoonish way. I love also the infographic at the bottom with the essentials info of the city (unfortunately dated 2005-> Mayor in Rome is now the far right politician Gianni Alemanno ) and the Big Mac Index! ——————- (IT) Più di 30 mappe di città del mondo con una prospettiva tutta nuova, sono disponibili su Onions Map. Da Amsterdam a Washington attraverso un 3d interattivo semi cartoonesco, si riescono ad individuare con facilità i monumenti e i grattacieli che costellano la città. E’ curiosa anche l’infografica che l’accompagna con le informazioni essenziali, e il Big Mac Index!. Peccato che dal faccione di Veltroni si vede che non è aggiornata al 2008.

(EN) Using the tools of design, a selected group of young designers of different nationalities, got together during the summer and created ComplexityMap, a project on information empowerment building maps around the city of Torino and trying to answer this question: How can the city be made legible and comprehensible, understood as a complex organism and as a web of physical and social networks? Starting from the assumption that the representation of the phenomena demands the gradual abandonment of classical visual languages they produced visualisations in the form of diagrams and maps of relationships, with the aim to induce a new way of viewing human-city interaction, and likely to become useful for outlining new criteria for its development. The topics could be: health and well-being, food and new food networks, urban mobility, security and quality of life in the city, new production systems, and forms of representation of the region and its communities. Some days ago, during the International Conference “Changing the Change”, the network of national agencies for design research presented a “white book” of Italian design research which contains cool maps describing the actors, themes, methodologies and the consequences that the researches have produced.
