The secret life of…/ La vita segreta di…

(EN) The Secret Life Series is a project by nonprofit INFORM, Inc. that explores the enviromental impacts of everyday products we all use. Some months ago they came out with the first video called: The Secret Life of Cell Phones, and now they announced the second one called: The Secret Life of Paper. The two videos show how these objects arrive on our desks through the phases that go from extracting raw materials to the recycling process.  After watching them you’ll think twice before clicking on Print button or getting seduced by that new model of mobile phone. Let’s enter the Recycle Age! ——– (IT)  “Secret Life Series” è un progetto della non profito INFORM, con l’obiettivo di esplorare l’impatto ambientale dei prodotti che usiamo tutti i giorni. Time for Climate Camp/Tempo di Climate Camp

(EN) Climate Camp 2008 started last monday and is located near Kingsnorth, a coal-fired power station that pumps 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. The organizers chose this location ‘cos while the current power station is scheduled to be knocked down, owners plan to build a brand new coal-fired plant in same place. On Saturday August 9th, the climate camp will go beyond talk and in a mass action will shut down Kingsnorth. At the beginning of July they distributed 30.000 copies of an inspiring freepress describing the politics or radical climate camp activism and the plan for the forthcoming week. There is also a nice hand-drawn map of the camp. When a climate camp in Italy that recently inaugurated a new coal power plant? (IT) Lunedì scorso è iniziato il Climate Camp 2008, posizionato proprio vicino a Kingsnorth una centrale a carbone che pompa nell’atmosfera 10 milioni di tonnellate di CO2 all’anno. The sound of melting ice/Il suono del ghiaccio che si scioglie

(EN) Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky last summer traveled by ship through the icy waters around Antarctica and recorded images and sounds. While staying there he also stumbled upon some extremely rare Soviet footage that later mixed into a 70 minutes’ multi-screen live performance: Terra Nova, the Antartica Suite. He writes: One of the things I noticed first and foremost, is how much the different nation states had “scripted” their territorial competitions in Europe into claims onto what is essentially a moving and ever transforming landscape. For me, Antartica’s ice was a perfect metaphor for today’s contemporary geo-political flux. The 5 minutes’ trailer includes some infographic about the state of Antartica. ————- (IT) Paul Miller aka DjSpooky ha passato l’estate scorsa navigando nelle acque ghiacciate dell’Antartico registrando suoni e immagini. Si è poi imbattuto in rari filmati di archivio sovietici ha rimixato creando un’installazione live multi schermo di 70 minuti: Terra Nova, the Antartica Suite. Paul scrive nella presentazione: Una

350ppm, 90 seconds, zero words/ 350ppm, 90 secondi, zero parole

(EN) Since the pre-Industrial Revolution concentration of carbon (Co2) in the atmosphere was roughly 275 ppm (parts per million). Carbon dioxide, mostly from burning of coal, gasoline and other fossil fuels, traps heat that otherwise would radiate into space. To decelerate Global Warming, CO2 will need to be reduced from its current 385 ppm to at most 350 ppm. 350 is the magic number, the safety line. The United Nations is working on a treaty, which is supposed to be completed in December of 2009 at a conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. But the current plans for the treaty are much too weak to get us back to safety. America has been producing more co2 than any other country, and leads the industrialized world in per capita emissions. Even though China now, for the first time last year, produces more co2 annually, the US still produces many times more carbon per person than China, India, and most other countries. And America
